Timber boards are among the most basic and important raw materials on any construction site. Despite their apparent simplicity, they play a central role in a wide range of applications—from formwork and concrete pours to scaffolding, roof substructures, and various on-site support works.
The most familiar use of construction timber boards is in formwork. The boards are used to build the forms into which concrete is poured, so they directly affect the quality of the pour and the finished result. A high-quality board must be straight, stable, and strong enough to withstand the high pressure of wet concrete without splitting or warping during use.
The construction industry uses various types of timber boards—planed and unplaned. A planed board is smoother and easier to work with, with precise dimensions and a uniform finish. An unplaned board, by contrast, has a rougher, more natural appearance and is widely used on construction sites for its good grip and ability to reduce costs on large projects.
Some of the timber has a green tint, indicating that it has undergone special treatment against pests, termites, and decay. This treatment helps extend the life of the timber and preserve it even under harsh site conditions and exposure to sun and moisture.
Beyond formwork, timber boards are also used to build temporary scaffolding, work platforms and substructures for tiled roofs. In these applications, board quality has genuine safety implications. Quality construction timber must be properly dried to prevent twisting, warping or cracking after exposure to sunlight and outdoor conditions.
When selecting timber boards for construction, price should not be the only consideration. Check the density of the wood grain, the moisture content and degree of drying, and the number of knots. Too many knots can create weak points and, under load, may cause breakage or reduce the board’s stability.
